Hard Water Stains on Glass: How to Remove Them — and Stop Them Coming Back

Those cloudy white spots on your shower screen, balcony glass or window panes are one of the most common complaints we hear from homes across Kerala. They start as faint water marks, survive normal cleaning, and slowly turn glass permanently hazy. Here's what they are, how to deal with them at each stage, and how to make sure you never fight this battle again.
What hard water stains actually are
When water evaporates off glass, it leaves behind the minerals it was carrying — mainly calcium and magnesium salts. Borewell and well water, common across Malappuram, Palakkad and much of Kerala, tends to carry more of these minerals than treated municipal supply. Each splash that dries adds another microscopic layer.
In the early stages these deposits sit on top of the glass. Left for months, they react with the glass surface itself and begin to etch it. That's the crucial distinction:
- Stage 1 — surface deposits: removable with the right cleaning.
- Stage 2 — etched staining: the glass itself is damaged; no household cleaner will fix it, because there's nothing left to "clean off."
Soap scum and humidity make it worse — soap residue binds minerals to the glass, and Kerala's humid air means glass rarely dries fully, giving deposits more time to bond.
Removing fresh stains safely
For stage-1 deposits, work gently — aggressive scrubbing scratches glass and makes future staining worse:
- Start with a mild acid. White vinegar diluted 1:1 with water, applied with a soft cloth and left for a few minutes, dissolves light mineral deposits. Rinse thoroughly.
- Use a dedicated glass descaler for stubborn spots. Follow the label, and never mix cleaning chemicals.
- Avoid abrasives. Scouring pads, steel wool and abrasive powders leave fine scratches that trap minerals and make the glass look permanently dull.
- Dry the glass afterwards. A quick wipe with a squeegee or dry cloth after every use is the single best free habit for shower glass.
If vinegar and descalers make no visible difference, the staining has likely etched in — and it's time for professional help rather than stronger chemicals.
Restoring etched glass
Etched, stage-2 staining can often be restored by professional glass polishing, which removes a microscopic layer of the damaged surface to bring back clarity. Whether restoration makes sense depends on the depth of etching and the value of the glass — a large facade panel or frameless shower enclosure is usually well worth restoring; a small, badly etched pane may be cheaper to replace.
The important point: once restored (or replaced), the glass is exactly as vulnerable as it was on day one. Without protection, the stains return — usually within months.
Stopping stains from coming back
This is where an easy-clean (hydrophobic) glass coating changes the picture. The coating bonds to the glass and creates a smooth, water-repellent surface:
- Water beads up and rolls off instead of sitting and evaporating, taking minerals with it.
- The few deposits that do form sit on the coating, not the glass, and wipe away without chemicals or scrubbing.
- Soap scum, grime and mould have far less to grip onto.
For shower screens, balcony glass, facades and mirrors in hard-water areas, coating immediately after installation or restoration is the difference between glass that stays clear for years and glass that's hazy again by next monsoon. We've covered how these coatings work in more detail in our guide to easy-clean glass coatings.
A simple decision guide
- New glass being installed? Coat it now — protection is cheapest before the first stain.
- Light water spots? Clean with diluted vinegar, then coat to stop the cycle.
- Cloudy patches that won't clean off? Get a professional assessment for restoration polishing plus coating.
